Volvo Caught in Another Safety Demo Blunder
Friday, November 18th, 2011
“The system works on humans. With humans you have a mass the radar can detect.” (A demonstration of how the system is supposed to work is depicted in the video below)
“The problem with an inflatable dummy is that it’s plastic and has air inside. The radar needs an echo, it looks for the body mass, and the radar doesn’t bounce off an inflatable dummy. It cannot see it. It sees through it. So we added a radar reflector — a 0.4-inch piece of plastic covered in aluminum foil — in the sandbag at the feet of the dummy.”The system works on humans. With humans you have a mass the radar can detect.” (A demonstration of how the system is supposed to work is depicted in the video below)Tisell said he has personally taken the place of the test dummy during development of the system.”I was one of the volunteers to have the car drive towards me during development,” he said. But Volvo has so far refused to allow media to stand in front of the car during a demonstration.”You never know what can happen. Driving towards a human being, if something goes wrong, it will be a very difficult situation to handle,” he said.”This system does not always work. It is a support system. It is not intended to replace the concentration of the driver. It is 90 percent accurate. If we made it 100 percent accurate, it would stop for things it shouldn’t stop for–a plastic bag blowing across the road. It should only brake when you have a real threat.”Tisell insisted there was no need to make any changes to the calibration of the pedestrian warning technology, but Volvo will review its public demonstration procedures for its crash avoidance systems. The 5,000 dummies identical to the one at the center of the latest bungle–distributed to Volvo dealers worldwide–will not be recalled. But they may get a new accessory: an aluminum belt that will help the system detect them. The Volvo S60 sedan and V70 wagon are the first vehicles in the world to feature technology that will allow the vehicles to come to a full emergency stop from highway speeds, detect pedestrians while the car is traveling at up to 50 mph, and avoid impact at speeds up to 22 mph.A camera in the windscreen detects the shapes and movements of humans up to roughly 50 yards in front of the car, while the radar unit in the grille scans the road ahead to calculate the distance between the car and the pedestrian, before deciding whether or not to intervene.Volvo says it has been working on crash avoidance technology since 1999. The first pedestrian safety prototype was tested in 2004 and finalized in 2007. Volvo spent the last three years testing the system over hundreds of thousands of miles around the world.

Proper driving position
Saturday, October 22nd, 2011
If you think proper driving position means having your hands positioned at "10 and 2 o'clock" on the steering wheel (as they taught you in driver's-education class), get with the times! You see, automobiles have changed considerably in the past few years… and therefore, so should your driving habits. Relax – the changes are minor, and they can actually increase your driving safety and comfort, which will come in handy on those long road trips.
Nowadays you should: Sit slightly reclined with your shoulders comfortably back in the seat. Sit as far back from the steering wheel as possible while still remaining in safe control of the vehicle.
Hold the outside rim of the steering wheel at "9 and 3 o'clock" or slightly lower. This position will minimize the risk of injury to your arms, hands and fingers in case your airbag deploys. Your arms should be bent slightly.
Be able to pivot your right foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal without lifting your heel from the floor.
Not checking your "blind spots" – those areas just outside the field of vision – can have disastrous effects when merging onto the highway or changing lanes. In fact, thousands of accidents occur each year because people who are changing lanes fail to see a vehicle that is right next to them before making such maneuvers! One of the ways you can protect yourself is to make sure your vehicle's side and rearview mirrors are positioned for maximum road view.
For the driver's side mirror: Place the side of your head against the window, then adjust the mirror until the side of your vehicle comes into view. For the passenger's side mirror: While sitting in the driver's seat, lean to the right so that your head is in the car's centerline. Adjust the mirror until the side of your vehicle comes into view.
There's an easy test you can take to make sure your mirrors are aligned correctly: When a vehicle leaves the field of vision of your rearview mirror, you should be able to see it immediately in one of your side mirrors.

Hawaii Auto Insurance Coverage
Friday, September 16th, 2011
Auto insurance is not a pleasant subject. We had to discuss the possibility of an auto accident, bodily injuries, or even fatality. Still, it is something that could not be ignored. If you do not have auto insurance, you might be forced to shell out huge sums if you get involved in an auto accident and you might even get financially ruined. Hence, you should know what types of auto insurance coverages would protect you from this risk. Normally, auto insurance could be divided into six major components, though several other minor types of coverages are offered by Hawaii insurance companies.
Bodily Injury Liability Coverage
Commonly known as liability coverage, this bodily injury liability coverage is mandatory in Hawaii by state law. According to the Hawaii statute, each person driving a vehicle should have a minimum bodily injury liability auto insurance policy limit of $20,000 per injured person and a minimum of $40,000 per accident. The minimum limit for property damage coverage is $10,000. This coverage is termed as 20/40/10.
In Hawaii, no fault systems had been adopted. Hence, your insurance company should honor your claims for bodily injury up to your policy limits, irrespective of who had been at fault in the auto accident. However, you would not lose some of the rights to file a lawsuit under this system. Hence, you should discuss with your insurance company about your rights when you buy the liability coverage.
Comprehensive Coverage
Would you be able to predict when a cyclone could hit your city and destroy your car? Or a stray fire leaves your car in ashes? What would happen if your car is stolen? These incidents might appear a bit far fetched but they do happen from time to time. They had been termed as ‘Acts of God’. When you buy comprehensive coverage, you would get refunded for the repairs or even replacement costs of the car up to the coverage limit.
Collision Coverage
When you have bodily injury liability coverage and comprehensive coverage, you get paid for your loss due to injuries or from unforeseen accidents. However, when you are involved in an accident, who would pay for the repair costs of the car or the replacement costs if the car is declared totaled in the accident? The collision coverage would be your savior under such circumstances. However, the collision coverage premiums are the steepest among the various coverages. As such, you should take the minimum possible coverage under this plan.
Medical Coverage
Liability coverage would protect only you and the other members listed in the policy. What would happen if one or more persons not covered by liability policy were traveling in your car and got injured in an accident? The medical coverage would come to the rescue and meet the medical bills of such persons.
Property Damage Coverage
If another person had been driving your car with your permission and damaged the property of someone else, this coverage would take care of the compensation that you would be required to shell out.
Uninsured and Underinsured Coverage
In an accident, it could so happen that another person without any insurance coverage was at fault. How would you make any claim against such a person? Sometimes, somebody might hit your vehicle and run away. What protection would you be able to get? The uninsured and underinsured policies take care of such situations and protect you from financial loss.

2007 Hyundai Entourage – Spied – Car and Driver
Monday, July 11th, 2011
Just this past October Hyundai announced plans to once again put a minivan in its expanding model range. In the wake of SUVs and crossovers, the Entourage has been an on-again/off-again product for the planners, but as of now they’re moving full-speed ahead for the 2007 model year.
Hyundai’s Entourage will arrive in mid-2006, with initial annual sales expected to be in the 27,000 range. Based on the Kia Sedona (and built on a platform that they both share with the current Hyundai Sonata) the Entourage will be available only in the long-wheelbase version; compared to the Sedona, which will be available in short- and long-wheelbase versions.
Powered by a 3.8-liter V-6, the Entourage comes standard with power-sliding doors, ABS, EBD, stability/traction control, triple-zone air conditioning, and six-airbags. Due to the aforementioned equipment it will likely be the leader in the standard safety arena.
Besides targeting Chrysler, Hyundai is after the market share of Honda and Toyota buyers as well.
